Edge effects on low temperature surface adsorption phases and phase transitions on finite-width square terraces

چکیده
A transfer matrix approach is used to conduct a thorough investigation of all possible adsorbate configurations or phases on terraces of various widths M including edge effects, and limited to firstand second-neighbor adsorbate–adsorbate interactions. Figures showing the configurations that occur within this model are presented for M 1⁄4 3 and 4, and detailed tables provide the phase sequences corresponding to all possible ranges of values for the interaction energies. Higher width terrace results have also been completed and are available upon request. As such, the model calculations provide a useful reference for experimentalists leading to predictions of the values of the interaction energies from the observed phase sequence and the conditions prevailing at the transition between phases. A few experimental results are interpreted using the model. One suggests specific experiments, which would make the observations more amenable to direct comparison with the calculations. # 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. Monomer adsorption on bcc (110) surfaces with first- and second-neighbor interactions
The low-temperature phases of monomer adsorption on body-centered-cubic (110) surfaces, infinite in one direction and of finite width, M, with non-periodic boundaries, are obtained with firstand second-neighbor interactions. These ordered phases, far below the critical temperature, are observed at values of the external gas pressure within specific ranges, and are characterized by M and the val...
متن کاملMonomer adsorption on a square lattice with first- and second-neighbor interactions
We obtain the low-temperature phases and phase transitions of monomer adsorption on a semi-infinite square lattice of width M , with firstand second-neighbor interactions. With first-neighbor interactions assumed to be repulsive, and allowing second-neighbor interactions to be attractive or repulsive, six sets of surface adsorption phases have been identified. Most of the numerical results cond...
متن کاملMonomer adsorption on equilateral triangular lattices with repulsive first-neighbor interactions.
A model of monomer adsorption on infinitely long, finite-width M equilateral triangular lattices with nonperiodic boundaries is presented. The study includes adsorbate-adsorbate first- and second-neighbor interactions with results obtained for repulsive first neighbors. The matrix method and numerical algorithms presented here allow determination of the occupational characteristics of the adsor...
متن کاملAdsorption on an equilateral triangular terrace three atomic sites in width: Application to chemisorption of CO on Pt(112).
A model of monomer adsorption on equilateral triangular terraces three atomic sites in width is presented where step sites are considered first neighbors. Adsorbate-substrate interactions at the terrace step are treated differently than at bulk sites. Adsorbate-adsorbate first neighbor interactions are considered to be repulsive while second neighbors are allowed to be either repulsive or attra...
متن کاملAtomic-scale dynamics of a two-dimensional gas-solid interface.
The interface between a two-dimensional (2D) molecular gas and a 2D molecular solid has been imaged with a low-temperature, ultrahigh-vacuum scanning tunneling microscope. The solid consists of benzene molecules strongly bound to step edges on a Cu{111} surface. Benzene molecules on the Cu{111} terraces move freely as a 2D gas at 77 kelvin. Benzene molecules transiently occupy well-defined adso...
